San Issue 43 - Winter-Spring/Zima-Proleće 2026.

Every issue of SAN brings together stories that may seem worlds apart, yet often share something essential.
In these pages, we move between Serbia and Canada, between memory and the present, between what we inherit and what we create for ourselves. We discover a small Canadian town with unexpected stories, celebrate the return of the direct Belgrade–Toronto air route, explore Serbian wine in Ontario, and witness art taking shape through mosaics, architecture, and contemporary expression.

We also look at the world around us through a wider lens. We reflect on individuality, authority, and the ways we see ourselves and others. We walk through Toronto’s markets, travel to Ottawa, and then return to Serbia through stories of traditional architecture, Jovan Cvijić and Aleksandar Deroko — reminders of how deeply landscape, history, and identity shape the spaces we call home.

This issue also takes us into the world of finance and anti-money laundering, introduces us to theatre artist Snežana Pešić and her creative life in Canada, and carries us much farther afield — to Thailand, and then back to Stari Ras, Sopoćani, Đurđevi Stupovi, and some of the places where Serbian history still lives in stone and landscape.

Nature and language have their place in these pages as well. We consider the species we too often notice only when they are threatened, and a language that continues to evolve as new words and influences become part of everyday speech.

At first, these subjects may appear unrelated. Yet together they tell a larger story — about people and place, Serbia and Canada, heritage and change, memory and creation.

We carry our histories with us, but we also continue to add to them. Our language changes, our cities change, and our lives take us across borders, yet certain connections remain.

Perhaps that is what this issue of SAN is ultimately about: understanding that preserving our heritage does not mean living in the past, and embracing something new does not require leaving our roots behind.
Somewhere between what we preserve and what we create, we find who we are.

With respect,
