OUR SCHOOL
This school year, the Ontario Ministry of Education is expanding its network of schools with a very special private institution - the first Serbian elementary school in Canada. On this occasion, we speak with Dejana Bajić, one of the school’s founders, the secretary of the board, and a mother of three.
How did the idea for this project come about?
The idea of establishing our school has been present among parents in Toronto for a long time. This desire has been nurtured for years. Recently, an opportunity arose for a dedicated team to come together around this vision. Since our first meeting in December 2023, we have been working diligently and consistently on this project. In the meantime, our volunteer team has been further strengthened by Serbian professionals from various fields, all essential for the development of such a significant and responsible undertaking. This school—or, as we informally call it, “Our School”—truly belongs to us in every sense of the word, as our community is building it through united efforts.
How did you move from an idea to actual implementation, and who supported you along the way?
We have found, and continue to find, support wherever the school is mentioned. First and foremost, the blessing from Bishop Mitrofan, the Diocese of Canada, as well as our esteemed priests and the church administration in Mississauga, was of great significance to us. That became the foundation of the project and a strong encouragement for our founding team.
After that, we received a major boost from our community, including our ambassador, Mr. Ralević, and our counsel, Mr. Tatomir. Many local entrepreneurs reached out with words of support and generous donations, without which we wouldn’t be where we are today.
We are deeply moved by this entire experience and by witnessing how our vision is slowly coming to life and our school’s mission is becoming a reality—thanks to unity, cooperation, dedication, and love, the very pillars that uphold this project.
What are the core values of the school? What makes the curriculum unique?
The school will offer education for students from pre-school to eighth grade, starting with two grades (first and second) in the first year and gradually expanding each following year. We are striving to create a perfect balance between a high-quality academic program and a rich selection of extracurricular activities. Our school will be more than just a place of learning, it will be a shared home for families, a space where our faith, language, and culture will be genuinely preserved.
As for the curriculum itself, our team of experts is currently designing a rich and unique program that will be available exclusively at St. Sava Elementary School. During our survey, parents clearly expressed their desire for a diverse and high-quality academic offering, and we are working hard to develop a program that will stand out in Canada with its uniqueness.
For example, our music education curriculum is being developed by Milica Ćurić, the founder of the renowned Kingsway School of Music. My daughter took private piano lessons at that school, and now our children will have the privilege of experiencing such a program as part of their regular studies! This is exactly how we approach every subject—with care, dedication, and a vision of providing a top-quality education.
What will be the language of instruction? Which subjects will first-grade students take?
Our official language of instruction is English, but we place special emphasis on preserving the Serbian language and culture. Daily lessons in Serbian language and cultural heritage are an essential part of our outstanding academic program, providing a strong foundation for the intellectual development and identity of Serbian children in the diaspora.

Subjects for elementary students:
● English Language and Literature
● Serbian Language and Literature
● Mathematics
● Science and Technology
● Social Studies, Home Economics
● Religious Education: Serbian Orthodox Faith
● Music and Visual Arts, Drama Club, and Dance
● Health and Physical Education
It’s no secret that cognitive abilities have been declining with each new generation. Children are finding it harder to learn, sit still for long periods, write, and read. How do you plan to address these challenges of modern urban environments?
We are very aware of this issue and are proactively working to create an environment that fosters both child development and high-quality education. I would highlight three key aspects of our approach.
First, class sizes will be limited to 15 students, allowing for individualized attention and a focused learning experience.
Second, in the lower grades, we will not use technology such as laptops and tablets because we believe that at this stage, it is crucial to encourage creativity, motor skill development, and direct interaction with the environment.
Third, our school is located in a natural setting, surrounded by a magnificent church and beautiful green grounds. This environment provides children with daily opportunities to play, socialize, and learn in the fresh air, which greatly contributes to their healthy growth and development.

How can parents register their child for the new school year? Does the school include preschool grades as well?
The school is open for preschool-age children (JK/SK), as well as first and second grade. Registration opens in February on our website. Follow us on Instagram, where we post all the important updates for parents: instagram.com/svetisavaskola.
Where is the “St. Sava” school, which everyone is already calling “Our School,” located? What still needs to be prepared before students start in September 2025?
Our desired location is the Serbian Centre at 2520 Dixie Rd, Mississauga, Ontario. We are currently in the process of obtaining the necessary city permits. The next step on our journey is fundraising for renovations and equipping the school.
T
o support this effort, we are organizing the Gala for Education, which will take place on April 26 at the Serbian Centre. I would like to invite everyone who is willing and able to financially support our school to purchase tickets for this special evening. We are preparing an unforgettable program with great food, music, and wonderful company—all in the spirit of building a bright future for our children. Come, be part of this beautiful story, and support our school!
The SAN magazine, dedicated to preserving the Serbian language, history, and culture in Canada, thanks you for this great endeavor and wishes St. Sava School classrooms full of curious minds, bright eyes, and joyful smiles.
Thank you very much, all the best!
