The tax on carbon dioxide emissions in Canada is a type of tax levied on emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases that contribute to climate change. It is part of Canada's approach to combating climate change, one where companies and various industries are charged a carbon tax as a way of encouraging emissions reductions as well as encouraging a shift towards cleaner energy sources. The tax is part of Canada's broader strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring the protection of the environment. The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) is a program that is part of Canada's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage the transition to cleaner energy sources. This program allows Canadian households to receive refunds or tax breaks as compensation for the various increased costs which have resulted from the introduction of the carbon tax. The main idea of this program is to reduce the burden on citizens and households while at the same time encouraging the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and supporting the transition to a more sustainable energy system.

New updates compared to previous laws/rules

This tax credit (CCR)  began being applied as of 2024. In the period between 2021 and 2023, it was known as - incentive payment for climate action /goals (CAIP). In the period between 2018 and 2020, it represented a refundable tax credit claimed on personal income tax returns on an annual basis.

Who has the right to qualify?

The right to the CCR is acquired by fulfilling the following conditions at the beginning of the month of payment:

  • You are a resident of Canada in the month prior to paying taxes
  • You are a resident of a province where the CCR is in effect on the first day of the month of payment. These provinces include: Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.
  • You are at least 19 years of age in the month before the CRRA makes the payment.
  • You are under the age of 19 and have or have had a spouse or common law partner.
  • You are or have been a parent and are living with your child.

If you have children and your child is registered to recieve the Canadian Children's Allowance (CCB), GST/HCT credit or CCR, this credit for each eligible child will be included in the final CCR calculation. If your child is not registered or does not qualify for a CCB or the GST/HST credit, you will need to register them for the CCR using the RC66 Canada child benefit app (this includes federal, provincial, and territorial programs).

Your child is only eligibile if they meet the following conditions at the beginning of the month of payment:

  • Your child is under the age of 19 and lives with you.
  • You are are the primary caregiver
  • Your child is registered for the CCR (or is already registered for a CCB or GST/HST credit)
  • In the case that you and your ex-spouse share custody of your child/children, if eligible, you will receive payments amounting to 50% of the original amount you would receive if the child lived with you full-time.

How much money can you get?

The CCR amount you receive depends on your family situation and the province in which you reside. The CCR is not subject to a reduction in benefits based on adjusted family net income.

The CCR includes a rural allowance of 10% of the base amount for residents of small and rural communities. As of April 2024 , the rural allowance will be increased to 20% of the base amount, for the base year 2023.
