A ROOF OVER ONES’S HEAD – THE BURNING ISSUE OF ONTARIO
Ontario, Canada's most populated province, is currently facing a housing crisis which is affecting all other facets of life for its citizens. With the arrival of more than 500,000 new immigrants since 2022, solving this housing problem is becoming a burning issue that cannot be resolved without support of the Federal government.
For students who rent apartments, families and young couples who want to buy their first home, finding an affordable place to live is becoming more and more difficult. In its newest report, The Ontario Chamber of Commerce warns that house prices have reached a point where they are pulling money from other sectors and are also causing challenges for businesses. As residents are having to spend more money on housing, less money is left over for other goods and services.
The government is aware of the current housing crisis and the fact that not enough homes are being built in our communities and are taking steps to resolve this problem as soon as possible. The government is taking urgent and concrete measures to make housing more affordable for its citizens. The Prime Minister’s office has stated, "We are investing in the rapid construction of more housing units. Housing solution problems will reduce housing costs for our citizens." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horvath announced a joint investment of nearly $64 million from both the Government of Canada and the city of Hamilton for construction and reconstruction of 214 families' homes in Hamilton. This announcement is an extension of a previous initiative to invest and build 7,255 homes in Hamilton, in which the federal government has been investing since 2015.
"It's really important to me that people of all ages and different incomes can consider Hamilton their home. This joint initiative and investment by the city of Hamilton and the Government of Canada will change the lives of hundreds of people and demonstrate the important partnership needed to support the people of Hamilton as life is becoming more and more expensive,” states Andrea Horvath, mayor of Hamilton.
Funds for faster construction
To reward municipalities that build homes, the Ontario government is launching the Fund for Faster Construction; a new three-year, $1.2 billion program, which provides significant new funding necessary for achieving the province's housing goals. To ensure that more municipalities have the necessary resources needed to build homes and expand the budget for faster construction, the province has placed more responsibility upon the mayors of different municipalities, those for which it is predicted that by 2031, they will have a population of 50,000 or more, and which will commit to fulfilling their provincial goals.
The Faster Construction Fund will provide $400million in annual financing (for three years) to municipalities that intend to meet the provincial housing targets by 2031. Municipalities which reach 80% of their annual target, each year will qualify for financing based upon its share of the total target of 1.5 million homes. Municipalities that exceed their goal will be allocated an additional bonus.
In his speech introducing this program, Prime Minister Ford has stated that “this fund would provide municipalities with resources they need to build more homes more quickly to cope with a housing crisis affecting many people, especially young families and newly arrived residents." Since 2015, the government has helped nearly two million Canadians find a place to call home across the country – but there is much more to be done. "When we invest in more affordable housing for Canadian families and create more jobs, we are developing economy and strengthening the middle class," the government has said.
