Canada may be a home to over a million new permanent residents in the next 2 years! Our new minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino replaced Ahmed Hussen who led Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) since 2017. Minister Mendicino will oversee Liberal promises to make moderate increases to immigration levels in the next few years.

In the last 4 years, the Liberals in a majority government increased immigration level from 260,000 to 330,800. Those targets are expected to increase to 350,000 in 2021, however, this time the Liberals will have to rely on opposition votes to reach the anticipated immigration targets as they won a minority government. In the last term the Liberal government focused on refugee intake and increased it to 15 %. Helping resettle as many as 250 people a year would introduce a refugee stream that includes humanitarian workers at risk, human rights advocates and journalists. Family class immigration levels remined unchanged, however, the economic class intake was reduced to 58 %. Furthermore, with the support of the Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth and the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, our Liberal government plans to work on implementing pilot programing to encourage more newcomers to settle in rural Canada.

The Liberal government also plans to waive the fees for the permanent residents obtaining the citizenship documents and that way make the citizenship process more accessible. This would in turn reduce the application processing times thus improving the service delivery and client services to make them more efficient and easier to use. The Liberal government is also implementing Municipal Nominee Program that would open up about 5,000 new spots for prospective immigrants and by doing so allow chambers of commerce, local labour councils and local communities to sponsor permanent immigrants. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) is a new initiative that allows employers in provinces such as Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to hire foreign professionals and that way address the population decline issues. Finally, with the support of the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness our government will continue to advance investments and reforms related to the asylum system to ensure it is adequate and meeting our country’s international legal obligations.

Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship under the leadership of the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino
will bring new compliance and enforcement tools into effect and move forward the full implementation of the new professional governance regime for immigration and citizenship consultants under the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants Act. The ministry will also complete the legislative work on changes to the Canadian Oath of Citizenship in accordance with Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Finally, our Liberal government will continue to work with the provinces and territories to focus on the delivery of excellent settlement services and provide successful integration of new Canadians into our multicultural society and workforce.
